Yes. Golnar is absolutely KILLING it in this outfit. It’s like dandy prof perfection, basically.
[And yo, do feel free to submit photos of yourself in fabulous queer academic fashion. Or at least let me geek out and point my camera phone at you if I spy you looking all dapper at some conference or something.]

Winter Dandy

Dandy Prof was genetically blessed with large calves that make boot shopping a total pain in the ass (seriously, do boot manufacturers not realize there is a HUGE market for dandies and ladies with calf circumferences larger than their ankles??), but has finally found, in a suburban mall department store, a lovely pair of 9 West black zip-up leather almost knee-high length boots. People, if I try really hard, I can even zip them up over skinny jeans. Miraculous!

(Dandy Prof gets caffeinated before a long day of teaching, with Counter Culture coffee in a WNYC mug, even though WHYY is streaming on the computer.)

Paired with a Uniqlo cardigan and Heat-Tech leggings (a winter MUST have), and a dress from the Gap that is loved not only for its dandy ruffles but also because it actually has pockets. Style *and* function!

Call for stories and images: Being (gender)queer on the job market

People! Nerds! Wannabe academic wage slaves! The academic meat market is now in full swing. Not only is anxiety in high gear about CVs, writing samples, letters of recommendation, and navigating Interfolio (not to mention the piss poor pool of poorly-paid positions being posted), you’ve got to—what?—worry about what the hell to wear on any interviews you manage to land.

Thankfully I am one of those privileged unicorns who actually got a tenure-track job last year, but this was not achieved without some astronomical gender-, race-, and class-based distress about the interview outfit. Which I’ll tell you all about in a future post. BUT! I’m only one person, and I’m sure there are a wealth of experiences out there. So pretty pretty please send me your stories of being queer, genderqueer, trans, gender nonconforming, whathaveyou, on the academic job market. I would also love images of your fabulous (or closeted!) interview outfits to thedandyprof@gmail.com. Your anonymity will be protected, of course.

(A preview: Yes, I bought and wore heels. But they were fucking dandy as hell.)

Off to Baltimore!

I expect to encounter many other dandy academics at this weekend’s American Studies Association meeting in Baltimore, MD. As soon as I finish eating a Romanesco version of Marc Bittman’s Mac-n-Cheese, I am hitting pedal to the metal in my favorite oxfords.

Hopefully I will have time and opportunity to post dispatches of fabulous queer academic fashion I encounter along the way.
